“Josie gets a Job”
Travis Schmidt 2014
interactive webpage story book, parallax scrolling techniques with jquery plugin skrollr
As the viewer scrolls through the webpage, images and animations move in and out of the browser window progressing a story of a girl named “Josie”. The contents of the narrative surround Josie’s life long journey of waiting in line for a job. The setting includes robots, flying televisions, and a background of graves and cities, implying a dystopian future. Parallels are drawn between this line that Josie waits in and the ultimate line that is the webpage’s scrollbar.
The story actually is a retelling of a short story I wrote a year before under the same name. At the time I was reading about unemployment, the rising income inequality gap, the Universal Basic Income proposal in Switzerland, and the growing trends of automation in work environments. Read the short story HERE.
